It is in mid-November 2025 that Porsche has officially announced its intention to field a second factory team starting with the Gen4, expected for the 2026-2027 season. This is an unprecedented decision in Formula E, where no manufacturer has yet fielded two official teams under the same brand.  Nissan team principal Tommaso Volpe revealed, in an interview for RacingNews365having learned the news in the same way as everyone else. "I learned about it from the press release.""The Italian explained. This revelation underlines the lack of prior discussions with other manufacturers or even with governing bodies, according to the Nissan boss."

Porsche's project would resemble a model of "junior team", as is the case for example in Formula 1 with Red Bull and Racing Bulls. The idea would be to run two separate teams under the same technical and sporting banner, with the possibility of integrating young talent. The name of the champion DTM Ayhancan Güven is already in contention for one of the seats, pending obtaining the electric Super Licence. To obtain this licence, a driver must complete FIA training dedicated to safety and the technical specificities of Formula E, accumulate at least 20 points over three years according to the FIA points system (or already hold a Super Licence / have competed in three ePrix the previous season), with the reigning champion automatically qualifying the following year.

For Tommaso Volpe, the issue goes beyond mere sporting considerations. It represents a genuine structural change in the way the championship operates. Until now, if an automotive group owned several participating brands, these operated separately, with distinct identities and bases, such as Citroën and DS Penske, for example, within the Stellantis group.

The fact that the same manufacturer operates two teams under the same brand raises, in his opinion, legitimate questions. "It's a change of model. If a manufacturer used two different brands, that would already be an evolution, but a less radical one."he emphasized. The main concern relates to competitive balance. Two teams potentially operating under the same roof could benefit from increased technical and strategic synergies, in a league where the gaps are traditionally narrow.

Responses expected from the FIA and the FEO

Faced with these questions, Nissan has officially contacted the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and Formula E Operations (FEO). According to Tommaso Volpe, several manufacturers share these concerns and are awaiting clarification. The goal is not to hinder a competitor, but to ensure that the regulatory framework guarantees fairness. "It would be naive to think that such a significant change would not raise any questions."he insisted, reminding everyone that no one benefits from seeing excessive domination take hold.

The context further complicates the analysis. The exact format of Gen4 is not yet fully defined, and discussions regarding the organization of race weekends are ongoing. Under these circumstances, anticipating all possible scenarios remains challenging. The introduction of Gen4 represents a major step for Formula E, with increased performance and a new technical architecture. In this evolving landscape, every strategic decision can have significant consequences.

If Porsche were to field two fully integrated factory teams, the impact on the hierarchy could be significant. For Nissan and the other manufacturers, the challenge now is to obtain clear guarantees regarding control mechanisms, information sharing, and operational independence. While awaiting these answers, the paddock is closely monitoring developments.
