This is a first in the history of the Formula EA team from a manufacturer will field not two, but four cars on the starting grid for the 2026/27 season. This is the meaning of the announcement made by Porsche This Monday, November 17th. The German manufacturer will also continue to support a customer team with two additional cars, bringing the total to six German Gen4 cars.

“Motorsport shapes our brand,” explains Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport. “Our heritage in traditional motorsport is unique and reflected in every Porsche. In the future, we hope to be able to say the same about electric motorsport. Compared to other motorsport competitions, Formula E offers a very interesting balance between effort and performance. It also allows us to develop more relevant technical solutions for our production sports cars. In particular, we want to take advantage of this operational evolution to discover and promote new talent at all levels, not just among the drivers.”

The second team will also be based at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach. This means there will definitely be six Porsches on the starting grid for the first E-Prix of the season: four for the Porsche teams and two for the customer team, which, according to The Race, could be Cupra (a brand of the Volkswagen Group, just like Porsche).

The grid should also soon be completed by the arrival of a second Stellantis team, in addition to Citroën. This could very likely be Opel, a rumor that has been circulating for many months. For Porsche, this investment in electric vehicles comes just weeks after the announcement of the program's discontinuation. WEC and provides clues about the direction the brand has chosen for its future. It may also suggest that FE, lacking new players since the departure (not replaced) of McLaren This summer, it encourages and facilitates increased financial efforts from manufacturers already present in the paddocks.

@Cyprien J.: There are already two Stellantis teams in Formula E with DS Automobiles and Citroën, which will replace Maserati in 2026. So, a third team coming with Opel?

It makes sense to share coffee grinders with Cupra since they belong to the same group... and it's consistent with Porsche's recent launch of a coffee machine with SMEG, among other household appliances! Formula E is undoubtedly much cheaper than the WEC...

It's not illogical to abandon the WEC for Formula E: it certainly costs much less and above all it allows for R&D (on the electric side) whereas the WEC no longer really allows this since the competition is "balanced" by the BOP.

It's beyond comprehension... a second Porsche team when the first one is withdrawing from the WEC... for economic reasons! And Stellantis... is supposedly partnering with Opel... (April Fool's joke)... !!!!!! 😎👀👎
