It was a lively race for this tenth round of the season, held in Shanghai. The first confrontation of the weekend on the Chinese circuit saw several collisions within the pack. On a track conducive to overtaking, there were numerous maneuvers, dictated by each driver's activation of attack modes.
Several leaders thus succeeded one another at the head of the race. When the pit stop window opened, at the end of the 13th of 29 laps, it was Nyck de Vries (Mahindra) who was in first place. It was at this point that championship leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan) chose to make his effort by activating his attack mode and taking control of the race.
A double overtake by Vergne for second place
After his stop, the Englishman emerged in 7th position, just ahead of polesitter Maximilian Günther. Taking advantage of his attack mode, the German immediately overtook the Briton. Pascal Wehrlein then slipped between the two men after his own stop.
The victory ultimately came down to Günther and Rowland, based on their attack mode management. The DS driver waited just over a minute longer than his rival before activating his second mode, which allowed him to easily take the lead and quickly build up a substantial gap to win.
Rowland struggled late in the race, losing second place to Taylor Barnard (McLaren). The championship leader didn't even manage to stay on the podium, overtaken by Dan Ticktum (Cupra). While Barnard and Ticktum seemed headed for second and third place, Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Penske) made an incredible double pass approaching the final chicane to pipped them to the post and secure a superb second place, thus giving DS Penske its first one-two finish! Barnard finished third. Norman Nato (Nissan) was sixth, behind his teammate Rowland. The latter continues to extend his huge championship lead.
