Is it the Valencia circuit that is particularly successful for Nyck de Vries And what about Edoardo Mortara, or has Mahindra found something to optimize its GEN3 EVO? The Indian team certainly placed both its drivers at the top of the timesheets. Mortara, who will begin his 9th season in the electric category, was the fastest, setting a time of 1:21.943 during the 45 laps completed in the morning session.
Mahindra achieved a double victory with Nyck de Vries setting the second fastest time. The recent eighth-place finisher in the championship—ahead of Mortara in ninth—also set his best time in the morning session, during which Jake Dennis posted the third-fastest overall time for Andretti.
However, it was Dan Ticktum (Cupra Kiro) who dominated the afternoon with a time of 1:21.746, placing him fourth ahead of the 2023-2024 champion, Pascal Wehrlein, who had been fastest on the first day. The German finished ahead of his new teammate Nico Müller.
Rowland's breakdown
The reigning champion, Oliver Rowland, was much more discreet. The Briton had to settle for 16th place after notably causing a red flag in the afternoon following a mechanical failure in the chicane at the Valencia circuit.
We must also highlight the fine performance of Taylor Barnard (DS Penske), who posted the third fastest time of the afternoon. The former McLaren made a successful debut with his new team, while his teammate Maximilian Günther finished with the 10th fastest overall time.
At Citroën, newcomers had a quieter day for Nick Cassidy (9th) and Jean-Éric Vergne (12th), who finished just behind. Sébastien Buemi (Envision, 11th). The Swiss rider's new teammate, Joel Eriksson, finished 20th and last. He will need to get back into the swing of things after several years away from racing, while the rookies also need time to adapt. Pepe Marti (Cupra Kiro) surprised everyone with the 10th fastest time of the afternoon, while Felipe Drugovich (Andretti) could only manage 19th.
The drivers and teams have a three-hour session remaining this Wednesday morning to get a feel for the conditions.
