While Freddie Slater (Prema), leader of FRECA before this first race in Barcelona, started from pole position, the Briton was unable to contain the very good start of Matteo De Palo (Trident) behind him. The Italian, second on the grid, but first after the first corner, did not relinquish his advantage thereafter, even widening the gap to nearly four seconds before the end of the race. The winner, De Palo regains a five-point lead at the top of FRECA going into Race 2, and increases the pressure he has been exerting on Freddie Slater for two weekends already.
Third, Pedro Clerot (VAR) also had a solid race, taking advantage of Enzo Deligny's (R-ace GP) retirement. Positioned on the outside of the first corner, the French driver was unable to hold his position, pushed outward just as the track became narrowest. Without a front wing at that point, the driver, who was making a strong comeback in the championship, was unfortunately unable to achieve more, watching the leaders battle it out for the crown.
Seventh at the finish, Evan Giltaire (ART GP) was unable to really make a difference from the pack. He finished ahead of Rashid Al Dhaheri (Prema), who was eighth, but was unable to get the better of Taito Kato, his teammate in the French team. On Sunday, the second qualifying session will take place from 9:50 a.m., while Race 2 will begin at 16:50 p.m. French time.
