It hadn't started well at all. This morning, a single formation lap under the Safety Car was enough for race control to make their decision: too much rain, too little visibility. The race would not start. Officials ultimately rescheduled Race 1 for 2:16 PM, while Race 14, initially planned for this afternoon, was simply cancelled.
As the Safety Car was deployed for the final lap, Alexandre Munoz perfectly resisted Rashid Al Dhaheri's attacks and crossed the finish line victorious. A simply perfect weekend for the 17-year-old Frenchman: after securing pole position and winning Race 1, he claimed his first ever FREC victory at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Ardennes. This first win is all the sweeter, as no rookie had managed to win in the FREC for two years.
Barely out of his car, the winner of the French F4 championship was already expressing his joy to the microphone of the FREC international production team: It was incredible, the pace was excellent throughout the race. It was close at the end with Rashid Al Dhaheri, but in the end I managed to stay ahead, so I'm very happy. Thanks to the team, we work very hard and we're improving race after race. "said the ART Grand Prix driver. The Frenchman finished ahead of Emirati Rashid Al Dhaheri, who came in second, and Japanese driver Kean Nakamura-Berta, who set the fastest lap and completed the podium in third place. Fellow French drivers Andrea Dupé and Jules Roussel finished in 22nd and 24th positions respectively."
Rain disrupted the race
Only seven short laps under green flag conditions were completed during the 30-minute race, a direct consequence of the heavy rain earlier in the morning. Race 1, already rescheduled at the expense of Race 2 (which was ultimately cancelled), had started behind the Safety Car for two laps before finding its rhythm. A few minor off-track excursions, however, required intervention from the marshals, leading to another Safety Car period. During the third Safety Car intervention, it only returned on the final lap, allowing the drivers to battle it out one last time at full speed.
The race management has not yet communicated any decision regarding the organization of a possible replacement race to compensate for the cancellation of Race 2.
