It was an epic finale at the Zandvoort circuit in the FREC series. To close the Dutch chapter of the European single-seater competition, MP Motorsport achieved a double victory on home soil. While the team, newly arrived in the category, had never won at this level, American Sebastian Wheldon delivered not one, but two wins for the home team thanks to perfectly executed race management.
As in Race 1, the driver in question didn't start from pole position, but fought his way up to the front. In this instance, it was thanks to a sublime overtaking maneuver, executed on the banked final sector, that the American got the better of Kean Nakamura-Berta, who was determined to win again. The British driver tried everything, right up until the final moments after the last restart from the Safety Car, to regain the lead. Despite this, he crossed the finish line in second place, having been penalized the previous day.
Munoz stands out, accidents still numerous
Finishing eighth in Race 2, Frenchman Alexandre Munoz finally got his chance to compete, 24 hours after being disqualified from qualifying. Starting eighth on the grid, and having made a remarkable overtake on Latvian Tomass Stolcermanis during the race, the driver from Ariège had hoped to pass Emanuele Olivieri ahead of him. However, a slight error saw him drop back to his original eighth place, just a few thousandths of a second away from overtaking his rival at the finish line. Fellow French drivers Andrea Dupé and Jules Roussel finished 11th and 17th respectively.
Finally, it's worth noting several spectacular crashes in this race, though thankfully without injury to the drivers. Andrija Kostic was involved in a three-way collision, notably rolling his car at low speed in the gravel. Emerging from his car uninjured, the Serbian driver confirmed that these new cars have a fairly significant tendency to roll over upon contact.
The next race for each of these drivers is fast approaching. Starting next week, from May 29th to 31st, the 30 drivers on the grid will be at Spa-Francorchamps to compete in the third of eight rounds of the season. It's a track that the former FFSA Academy members know well. Could this be the start of a first podium finish for the French team?
