The festivities don't stop for Álex Palou in 2025. Crowned champion for the fourth time...IndyCar, for the third consecutive time, the Spaniard also became last May the first Iberian to win the Indianapolis 500.
This week, he was able to take part in one of the most unique traditions of this legendary race, by having his face featured on the Borg-Warner Trophy. The trophy, created in 1936, depicts the 111 winners of the Indianapolis 500 (109 editions plus 2 victories achieved as a duo), each with their face in silver, as well as the face of Tony Hulman, the man who saved the Speedway after World War II, which is the only image in gold. The trophy is 1.63 meters tall and weighs 69 kilograms.
"This is one of those days that I knew I wanted to be a part of at some point in my career.", said Palou. “I knew it was going to take a lot of work, and finally, to be here and see the trophy for the first time is incredible. I know my face will always be there, whether I race for another year or 50. And whatever the story of IndyCar, it will always be there. So it’s great to be part of all these exceptional drivers. And yes, I feel it now. I want to see that face on that trophy again. To try to be a part of our sport’s history again.”
As every year since 1990, Álex Palou's face was sculpted by William Behrends. The sculptor first created a full-size mold, which he was able to refine by welcoming Palou to his studio. The effigy was then created and placed on the permanent trophy. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver will receive a miniature version of the trophy early next year, featuring only his likeness on the base. Every Indy 500 winner since 1988 receives their "Baby Borg" in the same format, with the exception of... simon pagenaud in 2019, which has his likeness but also that of his dog Norman on the base of his trophy.
