Moyer, along with Tim Cindric and Ron Ruzewski, was fired by Team Penske last May, just days before the Indianapolis 500. The three men were fired following the discovery, on Sunday during Indy 500 qualifying, of modified rear crash boxes on two of the team's three cars. The illegality of these cars, which followed a cheating scandal involving push-to-pass systems in 2024, served as the reason for the immediate termination of the contracts of the three highest-ranking people in the Penske single-seater team.
Unsurprisingly, many teams lined up to try to recruit the three masterminds, present for many years within a team that has won four titles and five Indy 500s since 2015. It was finally the Arrow team McLaren who managed to secure Moyer's services, partly thanks to the relationship he had developed with Tony Kanaan. The Brazilian was a driver at the time Kyle Moyer was operating at Andretti-Green Racing, winning a title in 2004.
Now team principal at Arrow McLaren, Kanaan logically jumped at the chance to reunite with his former team manager, who will become, as of June 30, director of competition at Arrow McLaren, and strategist for Nolan Siegel, who drives the car stamped with number 6.
"Kyle is one of the best strategists in the paddock, so if we're talking about his qualities, and not just him as a human being, he knows a lot about the world of racing.", Kanaan told The Associated Press. “Kyle is a people person, the kind of person who captivates people and makes them want to work for him. At the same time, he’s very direct, he challenges you, and he makes sure that every person I’ve seen work for Kyle wants to work for Kyle. That’s something I’ve experienced in my career, and it’s probably the most important thing. The respect I have for him is immense.”
Moyer's arrival will also allow Tony Kanaan to focus on the team's three cars, no longer being on Siegel's pit wall, as was the case in recent seasons. The winner of the 500 Indianapolis 2013 Miles continues in any case to surround himself with as many "old acquaintances" as possible in order to help his team reach the final stage and become champion ofIndyCarPato O'Ward is currently second in the championship, two places ahead of his teammate Christian Lundgaard.
