While Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren) and the two Hollinger Racing Juncos of Rinus VeeKay and Sting Ray Robb had to change their engines on Saturday morning before qualifying for the Detroit Grand Prix; several other Chevrolet-powered drivers also had to install a new engine block, due to a problem with a part from an external supplier.

While David Malukas (Team Penske) had to change his power unit due to his qualifying accident, his teammate Josef Newgarden and the three Arrow McLaren drivers of Pato O'Ward, Nolan Siegel, and Christian Lundgaard (again) also had to switch to new engines. Although these changes don't currently result in grid penalties, they could impact the drivers as the season progresses, as each engine must complete a minimum number of miles before it can be replaced with one not included in the season's allocated engine pool.

Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, explained the reason behind these multiple changes to FOX: “We had a problem with an external supplier, concerning the valve and its guide. It was a coating issue. The valve, within its guide, didn't have the correct coating, which meant that over time it wore down a bit more and wasn't guided as well in place. This doesn't happen on every engine, but we encountered quite a few engines that didn't have the correct coating. So we're changing it on the affected engines to ensure we can be as reliable as possible.”

It remains to be seen, starting at 18:50 p.m. this Sunday evening, whether the engine changes will have an impact on the performance of the Chevrolet drivers in question. Two Honda engines, those of Álex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) and Will Power (Andretti Global), will start from the front row of the grid, on Chevrolet and General Motors' home turf.
