Starting fourth on the grid, Christian Lundgaard managed to avoid the carnage of the first corner, with Felix Rosenqvist (Meyer Shank Racing) sending Pato O'Ward (Arrow) flying. McLaren) in a spin. With the two closest rivals of Álex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing), who secured pole position, being eliminated or nearly so after just one corner, the race seemed to be heading towards a one-man show for the championship leader.
A safety car period on lap 22 changed the complexion of the race, however, as Palou and Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Global) found themselves trapped, having not yet pitted. The American was eventually able to climb back up to ninth, while the Spaniard finished fifth. This was a boon for the outsiders, and the race became a battle between David Malukas (Team Penske) and Christian Lundgaard. The Dane took the lead during the final round of pit stops, executing an undercut, and led the last twenty laps to secure his second career victory, his first with Arrow McLaren.
Lundgaard's victory is entirely symbolic, since the return of the Woking brand to IndyCar In 2020, only Pato O'Ward had managed to win with a car papaya. Christian Lundgaard therefore joins a contingent which has only three members, Johnny Rutherford being, in the 70s, the only other driver to have won at the wheel of a McLaren in IndyCar.
For Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing), the race started very well, with the Frenchman moving from eleventh to fifth place, avoiding the hazards of the first corner. However, a collision with Marcus Armstrong (Meyer Shank Racing) caused him suspension problems, and he finished in 21st place. Now, starting Tuesday, it's time for the Indianapolis 500, with the first days of practice, followed by qualifying on May 16th and 17th, and the race on the 24th.
