Despite a technical violation, Ferrucci keeps his podium in Detroit

Santino Ferrucci - Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix - By: Paul Hurley

Following last Sunday's Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, theIndyCar conducted a post-race technical inspection which revealed an infraction concerning the No. 14 car, driven by Santino Ferrucci for the AJ Foyt Enterprises team.

During this inspection, it was found that the ballast installed to compensate for the driver's weight was insufficient. Indeed, the regulations require that the combined weight of the driver and his ballast be at least 185 pounds (approximately 84 kg), with a very strict tolerance ranging from 0 to +1 pound. However, the ballast in car No. 14 did not meet this requirement, which constitutes a violation of the technical rules.

However, IndyCar also noted that the car itself weighed 10 pounds more than the required minimum of 1 pounds for road and street courses, meaning the car was running over the regulatory weight.

Ferrucci remains second in Detroit

Despite this irregularity, Santino Ferrucci retained his final result and podium finish with second place at the Detroit Grand Prix. However, his team was fined $25. In addition, the No. 000 car lost 14 points in the driver and team standings, did not receive the bonus point for leading a lap, and was excluded from the awarding of engine points and race-related prize money.

The AJ Foyt team communicated on its social networks on this subject:

« We acknowledge and accept the penalty imposed for weighing 0.82 kilograms less than the minimum total weight requirement. This was an unintentional error, and we take full responsibility for it. Our car was actually 4,54 kilograms overweight, and this discrepancy was not intended to gain a competitive advantage.

However, we recognize that compliance with every rule is essential to ensuring fairness in this sport, no matter how small. We are working closely with our technical team to strengthen our processes and ensure this does not happen again.

We are grateful for the passion and integrity of IndyCar, and despite the disappointment of this situation, we respect the rules that ensure the fairness and safety of our competitions. Most importantly, we remain committed to racing the race properly, for our fans, our partners, and our sport. » the team indicates on its Instagram account.
