Palou, who had already set the fastest time on Tuesday, confirmed his good form in the week leading up to qualifying weekend. Conor Daly had shown great promise during the two days of testing held in April, and he continues in his role as a serious contender, driving a car with which Ryan Hunter-Reay had been a frontrunner at the end of the race, before a fuel supply problem put an end to his wild dream of victory for a team that only competes in the Indy 500 each year, and no other races.IndyCar.
The conditions were absolutely perfect for fast laps, with cloud cover and temperatures between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius. Drivers gained over 3 mph (5 km/h) between Tuesday's and Wednesday's best times, with Conor Daly setting the fastest lap at an average speed of 228,080 mph (367 km/h). David Malukas (Team Penske), Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing), and especially Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing) completed the top 5, all above 226 mph average on a lap.
No incidents marred this second full day of testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This Thursday, drivers will once again have access to the track between 18 p.m. and midnight Paris time, the final day of testing allowing teams to fine-tune their cars for driving in traffic. Indeed, starting Friday, the boost level will be increased on the Honda and Chevrolet engines, and the traditional "Fast Friday" will be used to prepare for qualifying, with runs primarily conducted solo. The boost will remain at the same level for qualifying before returning to its initial level next Monday for the penultimate practice session before the Indianapolis 500.
