The idea of a race in the streets of the United States' federal capital to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence was discussed when planning the 2026 season calendar, but was ultimately abandoned, most likely due to the difficulties of organizing such an event in Washington DC. However, the idea has been gaining momentum again in recent weeks, particularly given the support given by President Donald Trump and his administration.
Graham Rahal, who made his debut in IndyCar Nineteen years ago, and known for his outspokenness, he was questioned about this during the IndyCar media days held on Tuesday and Wednesday. The American would welcome this race, which could be organized in August, regardless of individual opinions on local politics.
"We all follow each other on social media. I know what some of you are thinking (laughs)."he told the journalists present. "This is a huge opportunity for IndyCar. It's sometimes a little embarrassing when I read the comments on social media in response to some of your posts. You're not directing the responses, but you read them and think, 'Oh, so this is the one race I'm not going to watch this year.' I mean, get a life. Have a life. If you're a true IndyCar fan, this is a huge opportunity for us. It hasn't been offered to..." NASCARnor to the Formula 1It was offered to IndyCar.
The son of Bobby Rahal, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1986, certainly sees the patriotic aspect of taking place in Washington, but also the potential economic benefits, with many sponsors who might want to link themselves with different teams for a unique race, which is not intended to return every year, and which is part of the festivities surrounding the 250th anniversary of the United States.
“I’m obviously a patriot. It doesn’t matter who’s in the White House, I don’t care who it is, if we can race in Washington, that would be great, especially on the National Mall. One of my favorite things to do is go to the National Mall, walk around at night, find out what’s going on there, and understand the history. Good or bad, understand the history, find out what it’s all about. So, for us to have the opportunity to race in Washington, if it comes up, I think it’s a great deal. It’s an important time of year. We have a lot of potential sponsors interested in the sport right now. They’re all rallying around this 250th anniversary and what it can offer them. Our sponsor (United Rentals) is particularly patriotic. You know that. It’s an important time for us.” If this race takes place, I think it will be an excellent opportunity for our team in particular to attract new partners and others.
Unlike other cities where approval for such a race only needs to come from the city council, the US Congress must now consider the issue, given that the main proposal is to run the race route along the National Mall, and past the Capitol, a place where advertising is prohibited in all its forms.
