Marcus Ericsson, like his teammate Kyle Kirkwood, was penalized for using unapproved spacers and parts on the power management system covers supplied by Dallara. As was the case with Team Penske's cars during qualifying, this constitutes an unauthorized modification of standard parts.
THEIndyCar announced that they had penalized both cars by sending them to the back of the Indy 500 field. Callum Ilott (Prema Racing) suffered the same fate, as one of his front wing fins was too low. Ericsson finished 31st, Kirkwood 32nd, and Ilott 33rd. All three drivers now score the number of points equivalent to their finishing position, and will also receive monetary bonuses based on their placing.
The three teams were also fined $100, and the team managers of the various cars are suspended for the next round of the season, which will take place this Sunday on the streets of Detroit. David Malukas (AJ Foyt Racing) now equals his best finishing position in IndyCar, finishing second in the Indy 000 ahead of Pato O'Ward (Arrow) McLaren). The victory of Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) was confirmed by the technical inspection following the event.
Marcus Ericsson finished second in Sunday's race, Kyle Kirkwood sixth, and Callum Ilott twelfth, marking Prema's best-ever IndyCar finish. Teams in the race have the right to appeal their penalties, according to the provisions of the IndyCar sporting and technical regulations.
