On January 10, during the launch evening of the Prema adventure in IndyCar, Cannon was present alongside the other team members, as well as regular drivers Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman, and reserve driver Romain Grosjean. Considered one of the "wizards" of IndyCar, Cannon is regularly seen as the main person responsible for a team's performance resurgence, mainly at the Indianapolis 500, where the three cars of Team Penske (a team in technical partnership with AJ Foyt Racing, Cannon's team) were placed on the front row of the 500 Indy 2024, before Josef Newgarden won in Sunday's race.
The Canadian engineer spoke via a press release sent to our colleagues at TrackSide Online, on his departure from the team: “I recently resigned from my position at Prema Racing. I was hired as Director of Engineering, partly on the strength of my 25 years of experience and recent Indy 500 results. I quickly felt that much of my advice was being ignored. It was my belief that my time was not going to be used in a useful way at Prema, and so I resigned. Prema should be commended for their commitment to IndyCar and their willingness to experience the multitude of challenges it presents. IndyCar is extremely competitive, and mastering the nuances is difficult for all teams involved. I ask that you support them, become a fan, and wish them the best.”
Contacted by AUTOhebdo, the team did not wish to comment on this departure. Prema continues its preparations for its first season in IndyCar, which will begin on March 2 in the streets of St. Petersburg. A true behemoth of European promotional formulas, Prema is discovering American-style car racing this year, via this first adventure in IndyCar.
