Mick Schumacher opens the door to IndyCar for 2026: "It's a great option"

Negotiating the 14 turns of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Monday as part of a test, Mick Schumacher took the wheel of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's No. 75 Honda. The driver, who was performing well, entered with Alpine en WEC completed 18 laps in the morning, notably achieving a time of 1:11.780, not counted due to a timing beacon problem, but placing him virtually third in the session.

Delighted by this experience, the driver of the Hypercar No. 36 entered in Endurance analyzed this test day after these first driving sessions. "The first impression is positive. It's very similar to some cars I've driven in the past, he explainedWe're still getting used to the pit stops, the maneuvers and everything we have to do, but so far so good. Some have said, obviously, that the steering is very heavy. The power, I think, is very similar to what I'm used to seeing in F2, in GP2 and in the cars I drove. So it's not exceptional, but it's also physical, which is what is sought after."

The former member of the house is behind this initiative Haas en F1 seemed especially won over by the fact of finding the sensations of a car at this stage of his career. “Actually, I’ve been wanting to try it for a while now. IndyCar, he admitted, and I've met some of the drivers who have been racing full-time in F1 for the last couple of years. They've always told me it's been great. I just wanted to see how the car feels, and so far, so good. They're a pleasure to work with, so I'm excited to be here and drive the car."

Schumacher and the temptation of IndyCar, the path to wisdom?

Highly inclined to make his return to Formula 1 in recent seasons, Mick Schumacher has, at this stage, still not seen any opening for him in this direction. Wiser than ever before in this regard, the German driver seemed to open the door to a sequel after this test carried out in Indianapolis. “Personally, I want to enjoy what I do. Enjoy running, and for that, I have to find the area where I feel most comfortable, he developed. I'm not saying that Europe, the WEC, or any other championship isn't. It's just that I've always dreamed of racing single-seaters. And so, I think IndyCar is closer to what I really like."

While not closing the door on a hypothetical return to F1, Mick Schumacher has in any case pleaded in favor of a multiple experience, without however drawing a line under the WEC and Alpine short term. “Of course, for the last two years my goal was to return to Formula 1. Unfortunately, that option didn't really materialize this year, nor in previous years, does he regret it despite everything?. At one point, I also wanted to race open-wheel cars again. It's a great option. And again, hearing other drivers' opinions on IndyCar kind of pushed me to make that happen today."

Not yet clearly decided on his future, but inclined to think further, Mick Schumacher prefers above all to take a step back now that the first step has been taken. “I have to decide if I really want to do this, he ponderedWe're going to take a few days or weeks to think about it and see what opportunities we have for the future. So far, so good. I've only done four sessions, but it's been really nice. I think it's just as good. (to complete a full season. Editor's note:). You know, that's what the championship is about, and I think it would be a mistake to just say, "Okay, I'm just going to play one part of it." The next few months could therefore be worth watching in this regard.

@Yves-Henri RANDIER When I see some rookies this season Mick.S deserved to stay in F1 more than a Colapinto who crashed 8 times in a full year and in fewer GPs than MSC, than an Antonelli who has already reached the same number of outings in less than a season and caused the direct retirement of two drivers, than an arrogant Lawson who provokes contact with everyone without having the level and who does not surpass a rookie Hadjar.... In short, an MSC not the best I agree but starting with Steiner and the Haas who had the ability to cut in two easily is obviously impressive but the driver is much stronger than those mentioned. Moreover 0 cards in endurance unlike his teammates and gave the first 3 podiums ofAlpine and not on a phenomenal stroke of luck like the victory at Fuji. Let him have fun in the States and it will be good.

He's right to head to the United States because for me, Formula 1 is ancient history, he's crashed too many times and cost Haas a lot. A good driver like many others, but will he succeed with the Yankees where many Europeans have never really managed to shine? I'm overcome with doubt!

Very few F1 drivers have succeeded in Indy, the last Frenchman is Grosjean and he didn't really shine... he was able to pull off a few successes but it was on road cars and Indy isn't just road cars. I think that if Schmi Jr wants to succeed in Indy cars it will require a full personal investment from him, not to mention that he will probably have to bring in a big sponsor or several. Grosjean was able to find a place "thanks" if I dare say to his accident, unfortunately according to the reports that we saw on him I had the impression that he took it with a certain diletente.. Personally I would advise junior to go through a season in Indy Light it would be IMHO a better way to learn and he would surely have less pressure in relation to his Name, not always easy to be the Son of and of a 7x F1 world champion, always "IMHO" I think that he should not have started under the name of his Per that of his mother would have been less heavy to carry in F1 and perhaps less would have been expected of him, or at least give him time and perhaps in another mid-table team at the time (dunce's cap) to the one who just said Alpine :-)

European F3 Champion is very different from F3 Champion (GP 3 at the time). In both F3 and F2, a year of learning and then the title, what's more at Prema. So OK, Mick is a good driver like there are dozens of others, but nothing more.

Mick …… had excellent tests yesterday at RLL (Indy) He needs to drive ….. in single-seaters, it's obvious !!!! Now see what happens next, it could be an excellent experience. Then come back for F1, for 2027, there will be a lot of opportunities…… ‼️. Otherwise stay in Indy ….. alainkf1@pt.lu 🤞 ….. Fighting Mick 😎👀👍
