While qualifying for the Indy 500 was expected to start later than scheduled on Saturday, the weather ultimately refused to cooperate, and the multiple downpours forced theIndyCar to cancel Saturday's races, without any laps ultimately being completed by any of the 33 drivers competing in the 110th edition of the Indy 500. Saturday's qualifying sessions were originally scheduled to determine positions 16 to 33 on the starting grid, as well as the nine direct qualifiers for the Fast 12 phase, and the six drivers who would compete for the final three spots.
Finally, the qualifying session will officially begin at 6 PM this Sunday. Each driver will only have one qualifying run (four laps, with the total time of the four laps determining their position in the field) and therefore will not be able to attempt to improve their position afterward. Once all 33 cars have completed their runs, positions 13th to 33rd will be determined, and the session will proceed directly to the Fast 12 round with the twelve fastest drivers.
As in the original schedule, the drivers will start one by one, beginning with the 12th fastest time from the first qualifying session and ending with the fastest. Positions 7 through 12 will be determined, and the six fastest drivers will compete for pole position in a third qualifying session. The weather forecast is much more favorable for Sunday, and the drivers should even be able to take to the track in the morning at Indiana for a practice session, which is crucial since there will only be one opportunity to qualify in the top twelve.
