Call him Sir Scott Dixon from now on! The 45-year-old New Zealand driver, six-time champion ofIndyCar (2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020), is indeed among those to be made Knights of the New Zealand Order of Merit. A member of the Order of Merit since 2009, Dixon was promoted to the rank of Companion ten years later, and now to the rank of Knight. This distinction is awarded to Dixon for services to motorsport, as explained in the official New Year Honours list.
The winner of the 2008 Indianapolis 500 explained to the New Zealand media Stuff that he initially did not believe the news, which he received not by an official letter as was the case previously, but by email, as is the custom in our time!
"It's a tremendous honor for me, and something I never imagined possible.", he explained. "In the digital world we live in, it arrived via email. I thought it might be spam, so I forwarded it to my wife to check, and from that moment on, you have to accept that it's reality."
Born in Australia, Dixon grew up in New Zealand before moving to the United States in 1998, where he built one of the most impressive track records in modern motorsport. He remains, however, a local boy from the suburbs of Auckland, the capital of New Zealand, and continues to proudly represent his country. “What’s true is that I love representing New Zealand on the biggest sporting stages in the world. When I win a race, I wave the flag, and it reminds me of where I come from, where I grew up.”
Married since 2008 to Emma, a former British 800m champion, Scott Dixon also indicated that the family they have built (they have three daughters, Poppy, Tilly, and Kit) will likely move to New Zealand at the end of the six-time IndyCar champion's racing career. He believes, however, that he still has a few years ahead of him to continue chasing a seventh title, which would allow him to equal AJ Foyt's record!
