The fourth round of the seasonIndyCarLast Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park perhaps better symbolized than ever the duality within Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Finishing third, Graham Rahal spent the entire race battling for a podium finish, which he ultimately achieved after starting third on the grid. On the other hand, his teammates... Mick Schumacher and Louis Foster had a hellish Sunday, finishing in the last two places of the race.

For RLL, experiencing roller coasters within a single season was not uncommon, as 2023 was both the year of the team's last victory (Christian Lundgaard in Toronto) and the year Graham Rahal failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. Never one to shy away from responding to criticism on social media, the son of the 1986 Indy 500 winner savored this podium finish as a form of revenge, both for himself and for his team.

“This is a great reward for the guys and girls on the team. Everyone worked so hard to get back here. We’ve heard all the rumors and nonsense we’re constantly bombarded with. I think everyone knows what I mean, I don’t need to add anything more. There’s enough nonsense I have to deal with already. It’s funny, if you read Twitter you’d think I don’t know how to qualify, when I was still third in Phoenix! Just shut up. There are a lot of idiots in the world right now, you have to live with it, if you’ll excuse the expression.”

Behind this combative rhetoric lie years of hardship, and above all, inconsistency. While RLL made numerous changes to its organization during the off-season, notably recruiting former IndyCar president Jay Frye, not everything can change overnight. Although Phoenix showed real promise on ovals, a track type that had been the team's Achilles' heel, Louis Foster and Mick Schumacher had more anonymous races than Rahal. Rahal himself was at the back of the pack at Arlington, Texas.

It was therefore very important for the American to stay on that podium, which constitutes a factual, concrete reward. “I didn’t defend as hard against Lundgaard (for second place. Ed.). Why? I really wanted that podium. I didn’t want us both to go off the track and do something stupid; I didn’t want to lose any time. I really wanted that podium before the break (until Long Beach, on April 19th. Ed.). It takes some pressure off the guys, and it’s really good for team morale.”

The two weeks before Long Beach will primarily allow the team to do the most important work: "We need to analyze why things went well this weekend."Rahal added. Because in order to replicate this kind of performance, you first need to understand what causes it…
