The Andretti team is definitely maintaining its form on street circuits! Having already qualified second in St. Petersburg, Florida, to start the season, Marcus Ericsson secured pole position in Arlington, Texas. The Swedish driver will start alongside Álex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing), who was five-tenths of a second slower in Q3, which was run for the first time in a new format. The six qualified drivers took to the track one after the other, in reverse order of their Q2 results, to complete a single flying lap.
Sixth in Q2, just a few hundredths of a second away from being eliminated by his teammate Kyle Kirkwood, Ericsson then delivered a perfect lap under pressure to secure his first pole position. Pato O'Ward (Arrow) McLaren) and Will Power (Andretti Global) will occupy the second row, while Meyer Shank Racing teammates Felix Rosenqvist and Marcus Armstrong qualified on the third row of the starting grid.
Last week's winner in Phoenix, Josef Newgarden (Team Penske), will start from eleventh position, behind his teammate David Malukas, who qualified ninth. For the third car Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske, after securing pole position in St. Petersburg, will start from last place this Sunday at 18 p.m. Paris time. McLaughlin caused a red flag in Q1, resulting in the loss of his two best laps of the session.
Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne Racing) qualified fifteenth, two positions ahead Mick Schumacher (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing).
