The American had a very strange qualifying session! Like several other pilots, including Jack Harvey (Coyne) and Alexander Rossi (Arrow McLaren), the hybrid system of car de Herta was not working during his qualifying run. L'IndyCar then gave him (and Harvey, but not Rossi, much to the dismay of the driver of the papaya single-seater) the opportunity to set off again, after all the other drivers had passed. If Harvey used this possibility (doing a total of three runs), Herta ultimately stayed on his first time, which had given him pole position for that night's race!

Bryan Herta's son was nevertheless strapped into his car, but common sense ultimately prevailed. For Colton Herta, this is a first pole position on an oval. He will start fourth in the second race, which will take place this Sunday. The qualifying system, which will be the same in Milwaukee at the end of the year, saw each driver set off for two laps of the track. The times of the first lap determined the grid for the first race, the times of the second lap the grid for Race 2.

In this little game, Scott McLaughlin took pole position for the second race of the weekend, with a new track record at stake. He is ahead of the championship leader, Álex Palou, who will start third in tonight's event (2 a.m. French time). The big disappointment is undoubtedly Josef Newgarden (Penske). Six-time winner at Iowa Speedway, he could do no better than 22nd for Race 1, and 14th for Race 2. Given the expected difficulties in overtaking, the American could definitively draw a line under his small chances of title this weekend…
