Road America – EL1: Kirkwood continues its momentum
© Penske Entertainment: Joe SkibinskiWinner of the last two IndyCar races, Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti) climbed to the top of the timesheets during Free Practice 1 at the Road America circuit.
The driver in the No. 27 car is also the only one to have managed to go under the minute 45 mark during his fastest lap. Known for its prowess on street circuits, the Andretti team usually has more difficulty on permanent road tracks, and this first free practice session is therefore a good indication for the team now managed by Dan Towriss.
The general classification was however slightly disrupted by Alexander going off the track. Rossi (ECR) at the very end of the session. The American driver caused a red flag while the majority of the field was engaged in a run on soft tires. This may explain the ninth place finish of Álex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing), the championship leader who was also leading the practice session until the final seven minutes.
Despite going into the gravel early in the session, Devlin DeFrancesco (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) set the second fastest time, ahead of a duo of Team Penske drivers, Will Power and Josef Newgarden. A second free practice session will take place this Saturday starting at 17 p.m. French time, before qualifying at 20:30 p.m.
