If the sun was out yesterday for the first free session, the weather took a 180° turn this Saturday! The rain was indeed present for these EL2, and the conditions do not inspire confidence regarding the weather for qualifying (21:25 p.m. French time this evening). This therefore forced the drivers to drive as much as possible on a very wet track, in order not to be trapped during the qualifying session.

Several drivers naturally made mistakes on a track made very slippery by the precipitation. Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti) went off course in the final corner, resulting in a red flag. As required by the regulations, he was not allowed to participate in the next five minutes under a green flag. A similar penalty was given to Alexander Red (Arrow McLaren). The American went off the track at Canada Corner, narrowly avoiding an intervention pick-up, where Pietro Fittipaldi (Rahal Letterman Lanigan) was already off the circuit.

Still no dry laps for Grosjean

Colton Herta therefore finished with the best time, and only nine loops covered on the longest route of the season. Fifth, Scott McLaughlin (Penske) was the most prolific, with ten completed laps. Theo Pourchaire (Arrow McLaren) ranked ninth, where Romain Grosjean (Juncos Hollinger Racing) set the 13th best time. The latter has still not completed a single lap in the dry this weekend, given that he hit the wall on his first flying lap in Free Practice 1 this Friday, unable to finish the session.

It remains to be seen whether the weather will remain the same in qualifying! One thing is certain, it is impossible to predict who will take pole position…
