Australian Will Power has just secured the 700th pole position in Team Penske history, and his 71st career pole position, thus improving his career total, which is the absolute record. It had been nearly two years and a pole position at Iowa Speedway in 2023 since the Toowoomba native had managed to start from the front of the grid.
"I attacked very hard", explained Power. “I knew that’s what I had to do, try to go flat out in Turns 3 and 4. I wasn’t completely flat out, but I was very close. It’s really cool, it’s been a while since I’ve had a pole, so I’m really excited. Hopefully we can perform well in the race, it would be great to win here.”
The eighth round of the 2025 season will take place tonight, starting at 2 a.m. French time. Alongside Will Power, his teammate Scott McLaughlin will be on the front row of the grid. Team Penske is thus back on track after a mixed start to the season, notably marked by the cheating scandal that surrounded it during the Indianapolis 500.
Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren) and David Malukas (AJ Foyt Racing) will start on the second row, confirming Chevrolet's supremacy in qualifying at Gateway. The American manufacturer will, however, hope to finally win for the first time this season, after five victories for Álex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) and two for Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti), who are both powered by Honda.
