On Sunday, at the finish of the last race of the season held at Suzuka, Sho Tsuboi entered a closed circle: that of drivers crowned in Super GT and Super Formula! At the end of the last meeting of the year, the TOM'S driver won the crown in the championship car Japanese, after his two titles in the GT series in 2021 and 2023. Moreover, the Kawagoe native can achieve an incredible double this season, since he also leads the Super GT championship with Kenta Yamashita before the final round, which will also take place at Suzuka on December 8.

Towards a Super Formula – Super GT double?

An already exceptional season for the one who managed his season perfectly: despite a laborious start, Sho Tsuboi quickly took on the role of serious contender for the title during the season, with in particular a formidable hat-trick at Fuji (three wins in three races) which ideally placed him for the last meeting of the season, the double-header at Suzuka. As champion, the 29-year-old driver did more than deliver, by taking two 2nd places and winning the title in style for his sixth season in the championship.

"I'm really happy. I've wanted to win this title for a long time, and now that I finally got it, it's an incredible feeling, rejoiced the new Super Formula champion, crowned in his first season at TOM'S in single-seater. This year I had a big change of environment because I changed teams, so I thought that if I didn't win the title this year, I would cause a bad feeling to both teams, both at CERUMO that I was until last year and at TOM'S that welcomed me. TOM'S was the champion team last year, so I strongly felt that the only thing I could do was to reward both teams with good results. So this year I was more motivated than usual.

“I’m really happy that I was able to win the championship this year. I think Super Formula is the category that determines the fastest driver in Japan, in the sense that you use the same car, the same tires and you drive alone, underlines the driver of the n°36, relieved to have finally achieved the double. So I always wanted this title and I worked hard for it. Even though I won the title in Super GT, I didn't manage to win it in Super Formula, so I always felt frustrated, and now that I finally achieved it this year, I'm really happy."

Tsuboi would like to try his hand at an F1 car

Although he still has one more performance to give this season, with the final round and the outcome for the Super GT title, Sho Tsuboi is already enjoying a golden year filled with success, without really thinking about the future… even if he has expressed his desire to one day drive a Formula 1. "Right now I'm only thinking about one thing: I've finally won the title. Of course I want to drive an F1 car. But even if you want to, it doesn't mean you can, recognizes the Japanese. The F1 World Championship is the premier class in the world that everyone is aiming for. Of course, if I have a chance, I would like to take it, but for now, I want to enjoy this victory for a few days.

Will Sho Tsuboi have the chance, like Ritomo Miyata, to go abroad to discover new championships outside Japan? Will he have the opportunity to drive a Formula 1 in the near future? Let's remember that the Japanese driver is involved in Super Formula and Super GT with the TOM'S team and therefore, with Toyota. Toyota, which a few weeks ago teamed up with Haas for a technical partnership with the American team. So, maybe?
