24 Hours of Le Mans – EL2: Toyota reassures itself during the night, big accident for Callum Ilott

Sébastien Buemi (Toyota) was the author of the best time in this first night session of the week. A session marked by the accident of Callum Ilott (Porsche) at the very end of the session at the S du Tertre rouge.

The second free practice session at 24 Hours of Le Mans took place at nightfall this Wednesday, June 12. This two-hour session allowed the different crews to complete their five regulatory laps in night conditions, and thus get their bearings in the light of the powerful headlights.

While taking part in his final flying lap at 23:58 p.m., Callum Ilott (Porsche 963 n°12) violently left the track at the exit of the S du Tertre Rouge. The Englishman hit the front and the Hypercar was quite seriously damaged. The session was stopped at the red flag. The 25-year-old driver emerged from the car unscathed, to the applause of the Sarthe public. Too bad, because he had set the 4th time! Callum Ilott was still taken to the medical center as a precaution.

In great delicacy during qualifying (none of its cars will participate in the Hypercar), Toyota raised the bar somewhat this Wednesday evening. Sébastien Buemi, aboard the No. 010 Toyota GR8 Hybrid, set the best time with a lap in 3′27″474. The Swiss finished with more than half a second of margin on the Classic Ferrari for sale 499P, not the factory car, but that of the semi-private team AF Corse (Robert Kubica-Yifei Ye-Robert Shwartzman).

THEAlpine n°35, already plagued by problems during Free Practice 1, encountered a new problem during this Free Practice 2 session. The German Mick Schumacher completed his first night laps at Le Mans in the No. 36, which is the first French car in the standings this night (5th). You have to go down to the 16th and 18th rows to find traces of both Peugeot 9X8.

A few hours after setting the best time in qualifying, Dries Vanthoor crashed into the wall under braking in Indianapolis at the wheel of the #15 BMW, with less than twenty minutes to go. The Hypercar remained in its pit box until the checkered flag.

Hypercar ranking:

In LM P2, Cool Racing continues to dominate the debates, this time with the young rookie Lorenzo Fluxa (n°37). The top three is quite similar to what we observed previously in qualifying with the presence of Panis Racing in 3rd place, behind United Autosports. At the forefront this afternoon, the purple Oreca 07 of AO by TF Sport is only in 14th place, but priority was given to the running of the gentlemen drivers of the crew (PJ Hyett and Alex Quinn) , Louis Delétraz having only taken the wheel for 18 minutes.

LM P2 classification:

In GT3, it was once again a Ford Mustang that finished at the top of the standings, with Dennis Olsen in the #88. Four manufacturers occupy the first four places, with Ford, followed by Aston Martin, BMW and Corvette. The Iron Dames finished 10th with Michelle Gatting in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3.

Free Practice 3 of the 24 2024 Hours of Le Mans will begin on Thursday at 15 p.m.
