La Porsche Will the 963 soon become a road-legal model? At least, that's what the trailer unveiled Friday by the German manufacturer seems to suggest. In this short 48-second video, the Stuttgart firm recalls the launch, 50 years ago, of the road version of the legendary 917, victorious in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in 1970 1971.

Half a century later, is Porsche preparing to once again transform a prototype entered in the Le Mans classic into a road car? The conclusion of the video seems to indicate this: it ends with a “What if?”, followed by the words “June 2025” and, above all, a side shot of the 963 entered in the Hypercar category of the WEC.

While a special livery for the 24 Hours of Le Mans cannot be completely ruled out, the final paragraph of the press release published by Porsche on the same day seems to remove any doubt about the nature of the upcoming announcement. Tracing the history of the only road-legal Porsche 917, the brand writes: " It's important to note that while his descendant may be enjoying success on the track today, the spirit and desire that created a road-going 917 so long ago remains very much alive five decades later, which begs the question: what if? »

The Porsche 963 has yet to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but it has already built up a solid track record since its debut in 2023: the Drivers' World Title in 2024 with Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and André Lotterer, two consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona (2024, 2025), as well as a success at the 12 Hours of Sebring this year.

This would not be the first time that a manufacturer entered in the Hypercar category has offered a derivative version of its prototype. Ferrari launched the 2023P Modificata at the end of 499, a non-competition homologated version of its double title-winning car at Le Mans, exclusively intended for use on the circuit.
