The announcement has something original about it. This Tuesday, Porsche has revealed the identity of its latest driver for the 24H of Le Mans…on his WhatsApp channel. It was Pascal Wehrlein himself who announced his presence in the Sarthe region in June via a voice message, aboard the third Porsche 963 entered in the premier class, Hypercar. The German, reigning world champion in Formula E, will participate in the Le Mans event for the first time in his career and will drive the No. 4 Porsche alongside Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy.

“Competing for Porsche Penske Motorsport at Le Mans is a dream come true for me, Pascal Wehrlein is delightedI'm looking forward to this great challenge because, unlike Formula E, I have to share with the Porsche 963 everything that I would normally have to adapt to myself: the position, the set-up, the strategy and much more. Of course, I want to add major titles in other championships to my Formula E World Championship title, but my main goal is to do a good job for the team and learn as much as possible. Porsche has such an iconic heritage in motorsport, I am extremely grateful for this opportunity."

No Vettel at Porsche

Pascal Wehrlein was the main favorite to occupy the last Porsche seat at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The German competed in his first race with the Porsche 963 at the 24 Hours of Daytona last January, with JDC-Miller Motorsports (6th in the GTP class). The 30-year-old driver was competing with another official Porsche driver: Nico Müller, who had also competed in a race in IMSA at the beginning of March, during the 12 hours from SebringThe Swiss also drove with the private LMDh of JDC-Miller Motorsports.

Other names had also been circulating to occupy the third seat, such as that of Sebastian Vettel. The four-time F1 world champion had tested the Porsche 963 last year., without this resulting in a race commitment. Antonio Félix da Costa's name was also in the running, but he was beaten by his German teammate in Formula E. Nevertheless, the Portuguese driver will indeed be at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LM P2 category. The name of the team concerned has not yet been revealed. "I'm very happy to be back at Le Mans after a year's absence," commented the 33-year-old driver. "During my last participation in LM P2, I won the race in the category (with JOTA in 2022, Editor's note). That's my goal again this year. I can't wait to attack alongside my teammates in June."

As in the last two editions, Porsche will present three cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This year, the Stuttgart-based firm benefits from the automatic invitation for the manufacturer that won the IMSA title the previous season to enter a third Hypercar. The #5 and #6 will feature the classic crews entered year-round in WEC, with Julien Andlauer, Michael Christensen and Mathieu Jaminet on No. 5, and Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and Matt Campbell.
