24 Hours of Le Mans – Test Day: Toyota leads the way at midday

The No. 010 Toyota GR7 Hybrid (Lopez/Kobayashi/De Vries) led the first practice session of the 24 2024 Hours of Le Mans Test Day. A studious session, interrupted twice by a red flag.

Faster during this first session, the #7 is also the second car to have completed the most laps this morning, behind the #11 Isotta Fraschini. This first session was an opportunity for José Maria Lopez to get used to driving a Hypercar again. The Argentinian driver is in fact entered the entire season in the No. 3 Lexus RC F GT87, but he had to change cars this weekend due to his injury. Mike conway, victim of a fractured clavicle and ribs. It is Kamui Kobayashi who achieved the best performance of these first three hours of driving, in 3'28″467.

La Porsche Penske n°6 achieved the second best time, eight tenths behind the best reference. BMW finished with the third fastest time, thanks to the #20, ahead of the #63 Lamborghini, the Ferrari AF-Corsica n°83, the Toyota No. 8 and the No. 4 Penske Porsche. In LMP2, it was the No. 28 IDEC Sport which achieved the best time, in 3'37″044. The LMGT3 is led by the No. 78 Akkodis ASP Team Lexus, in 4'00″106. Times which are undoubtedly not yet representative, a good part of the session being intended to get back into shape with a track on which we only run once a year. Some teams, like Isotta Fraschini, took the opportunity to break in various brake systems, and to give their Rookie crews ample time to complete the ten laps required by the ACO and the FIA.

Two red flags interrupted the session. The first after 40 minutes, when Renger van der Zande stopped the No. 3 Cadillac near Mulsanne, the fault of a fuel system problem. The American was able to restart after a long time in the pits, and she completed 11 laps in total. Lorenzo Fluxa caused a second interruption in the very last minutes of the session, at the wheel of the #2 COOL Racing LMP37, when he went off the track in the Porsche corners. A Full Course Yellow procedure was necessary following the stop on the track of the #87 Lexus in the Esses de la Forêt.

This Test Day is also an opportunity for the organizing teams to test the different procedures, and this is how a long period of neutralization behind the safety car was decreed. The opportunity to familiarize yourself with the Merging and Pass Around system, which made its debut last year and which is present for this 92nd edition in a refined version.
