This Friday, during the traditional ACO press conference on the eve of the 24H of Le Mans, the FIA took the opportunity to make several important announcements. One of them concerns LMP2 and more specifically the chassis and engine suppliers.
Thus, the chassis will now only be supplied by two manufacturers (compared to four currently): Oreca and Ligier. Gibson, meanwhile, remains the sole supplier of the V8 engine for these prototypes. Regarding the latter, one new feature is worth noting: it will be turbocharged and no longer naturally aspirated as is currently the case.
"This is good news that will allow us to maintain stability and continuity. We have invested a lot in the LMP2 and it was important that we could continue. The goal is to create a car as brilliant and efficient as the current 07.", rejoices Hugues de Chaunac, president of the Oreca group.
Future LMP2s will have a turbo engine
He pursues : "We thank the FIA and the ACO for their trust. This new selection rewards our commitment and the experience we have acquired over more than ten years in LMP2. We have put all our expertise into preparing this application, with the aim of supporting the evolution of this category and offering a reliable, robust platform adapted to the challenges of tomorrow."
Precisely, concerning the future engine, which will be turbo, the historic director declares: "It's part of the expected evolution. We need to consume less, we need to make less noise. I think it was the right time to make the switch."
