It was on the Portimão track in Portugal that the GMR-001 made its first "long" outing. A session ofEndurance which allowed the four announced drivers, André Lotterer, Pipo Derani, Mathys Jaubert and Dani Juncadella, to drive day and night at the wheel of the Korean prototype, with an Oreca chassis, during a 32-hour endurance test
As the group's brand indicates Hyundai In its press release, the car's components were pushed to breaking point, so we can imagine that these 32 hours did not pass without any technical problems. Something completely normal for such a young car, which only took to the track for the first time at the beginning of August. It's even desirable, according to the team's chief engineer, Justin Taylor.
“The main objective of an endurance test is to cover as many kilometers as possible with the car and see what problems may arise along the way. We are still only six or seven days into the car's development, so at this stage, we hope that problems will appear so we have the opportunity to resolve them. I think we can be satisfied with the results of the tests. We have covered a lot of kilometers, but we are still at the very beginning of the car's development, so we have learned something new at every stage, which we can use in our next tests.”
Mathys Jaubert tested the Genesis Hypercar in Portimão: “It’s an easy car to handle”
With temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius in the middle of the day, the team was most looking forward to the night run. It was an opportunity to test the GMR-001's lighting, which André Lotterer, the group's most experienced driver, was pleased with.
“We quickly realized that our headlights performed very well. This is very satisfying, because I know it generated a lot of buzz. We decided to develop our own headlights to maintain the Genesis styling identity, but we knew we also had to focus on quality. So we were very pleased to be able to validate this project so easily.”
Confirmed last week as new Genesis Magma Racing drivers in WEC, Mathys Jaubert and Dani Juncadella joined their teammates in Portugal to also accumulate kilometers in an environment that will be very familiar to them. The Spanish driver, who arrived at the last minute to compensate for the absence of Logan sargeant en ELMS at the beginning of the year, is counting on his vast experience to help the Korean team.
“I think that as new drivers on the project, Mathys and I can bring a lot to the table with our feedback. Even though I don’t have any experience in the Hypercar category, I have a lot of experience in endurance racing with different manufacturers. So I’ve worked in high-performance environments for many years during my career and I can bring these different experiences to the development.”
The Genesis team has announced that testing will continue with its new Hypercar, focusing on both performance and endurance tests.
