The world champion carEndurance title holder will therefore not finish the season without a single victory on the clock. While Porsche Expecting to struggle at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Kevin Estre finished the race as the winner in the United States this Sunday, after a race marked by many hours spent in the rain. The Frenchman, however, was responsible for bringing the car to the finish line on a track that was drying out.
“It was very complicated at the end of the race because I knew what I had to do on a wet track, but when the track started to dry it was very difficult to manage. I didn’t know if I should keep the rain tires on the car, if we were going to kill them or not. Ferrari #50 was fast at the end of the race so I was under a lot of pressure. It's very nice to be back on the top step of the podium, where we deserve to be with the #6 Porsche. I feel like we're a great team and I'm very proud of our work this weekend because we weren't in the fight for pure pace this weekend. With difficult conditions, we're showing that we can respond."
For his teammate Matt Campbell, it is a first victory in the general classification in WEC, who experienced the joys of success in GTE Pro at the time. The Australian praised the teamwork that resulted in this victory: “It feels good to get a win. I've had a few podiums overall, but never success. It's fantastic. The race was very difficult. It was really hard to keep the car on track at times, but we managed. The guys did a great job with the strategy too, so well done to them.”
Interviewed during the race, Laurens Vanthoor joked that he wanted to do the rain dance until the finish, but it ultimately worked! The Belgian watched his teammates bring the car back to the top of the general classification, which confirmed Porsche's mastery when conditions are difficult.
“It's a victory that tastes really good because we didn't come here expecting to fight for the win. The changing conditions showed that no matter the pace, we know how to manage a race with the No. 6. We drove the perfect race and I'm delighted that we got a victory this year.”
