The 2026 FIA season WEC It finally begins! After the postponement of the 1812km Qatar race in October due to the conflict in the Middle East, the new season of the World Championship kicks off in Italy.Endurance 2026 takes place this Sunday, April 19th.
This first event of the season also marks the competitive debut of the new Michelin Pilot Sport Endurance range in the Hypercar category. Two tire compounds are available: Soft and Medium.
In this context, Tuesday's Prologue was particularly useful for the builders. The Imola Prologue represents an extremely valuable opportunity for us and our partners. " explains Pierre Alves, Endurance Manager at Michelin Motorsport.
« Having eight hours of track time just before the race weekend allows us to very accurately assess the performance of our tires, especially the Soft and Medium compounds. We will pay particular attention to their temperature rise, which is a key factor on a circuit like Imola, but also to their consistency over time.
At this time of year, weather conditions can be highly variable, adding an extra strategic dimension. It is therefore essential to offer tires capable of adapting to a wide range of situations. The start of the week is indeed wet in Emilia-Romagna, with the first day of testing on a wet tarmac and heavy rain on the circuit this Wednesday afternoon, particularly in the late afternoon.
“Imola remains a relatively low-energy circuit, but one that imposes strong constraints under acceleration,” adds Pierre Alves. Hypercars also make extensive use of the kerbs, which increases the mechanical stress on the tires.
Finally, as overtaking is particularly difficult, tire strategy plays a central role. The ability to complete multiple stints on the same set of tires becomes a major performance lever, allowing drivers to gain valuable time during pit stops. It is precisely on these aspects that we will be supporting our partners throughout the weekend. »
As in previous seasons, Michelin is the exclusive supplier of tires for all Hypercars competing in the FIA WEC. Each prototype has a regulated tire allocation, ensuring sporting fairness and strategic control.
Each Hypercar will have twelve tires for Free Practice, four tires for Hyperpole, and 18 tires for Qualifying and the race. The tires are available in the following sizes: 29/71-18 at the front and 34/71-18 at the rear. A dedicated rain tire range will also be available in the same sizes for wet conditions.
Free Practice 1 for the 6 Hours of Imola will take place from 10:15 am on Friday, April 17.
