The final of the world championship Formula 1 will take place this Sunday, December 7, at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi — and for the first time since 2021, the title will once again be decided in the Emirates.

Three drivers are still in contention for the title: Lando Norris (McLaren), leader with 408 points, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) to 396, and Oscar piastri (McLaren) at 392.
If Norris manages to finish on the podium, he will be crowned champion, regardless of his rivals' results. For Verstappen, the scenario is more demanding: he must win the race and hope that Norris finishes 4th or lower. As for Piastri, he absolutely must win—and rely on a poor performance from Norris (6th or lower).

A three-way battle for the title

This is the first time since 2010 that a final Grand Prix has featured three title contenders — a powerful historical reminder, much like the surprising crowning of Sebastian Vettel in 2010, when there were four of them in the running.

During Friday's free practice sessions in Abu Dhabi, Norris set the fastest times ahead of Verstappen, seemingly confirming that he enters this final round with a strong chance. Mathematically, 25 points are still up for grabs on Sunday — which still offers a margin, even if the advantage clearly remains with the McLaren driver.

In the event of a tie, Norris also has a slight advantage in the number of second places this season — which could matter if Verstappen or Piastri manage to equal his total points, as all three drivers have 7 wins each, the first criterion for separating them in the event of a tie.
