Esteban Ocon frustrated after qualifying in Melbourne: "It's a missed opportunity"

The first qualifying session of the 2026 season Formula 1 The Australian Grand Prix did not deliver the hoped-for scenario Esteban OconOn the Albert Park circuit, the French driver quickly realized that something was wrong during his final attempts in Q2, in a session marked by the dominance of the other drivers. Mercedes Benz and an intense battle in the middle of the grid.

Speaking to Canal+, the pilot Haas did not hide his disappointment after remaining far from the positions that would allow him to aim for a more comfortable qualification for the race. "It's a shame. I think we didn't maximize everything during this session. We lost downforce on the rear of the car. Something degraded or broke. Or we lost grip. There was quite a bit of instability in that last part. We were six or seven tenths off the pace. It's a missed opportunity."

In a relatively compact midfield, a few tenths of a second are enough to shake up the order. The loss of stability mentioned by the Frenchman in the final moments of the session prevented him from improving his time enough to close the gap to the leading group. On a street circuit like Melbourne, where confidence in the car is essential for attacking braking zones and kerbs, this type of imbalance can quickly cost several positions, or worse, as demonstrated by the result. Max Verstappen who went off the track at the very first corner of his first flying lap after locking up his front right tire.

"Nobody knows where we'll be in the race."

Despite this disappointing qualifying result, Esteban Ocon refuses to draw any definitive conclusions before the race. The Australian Grand Prix weekend remains the first real test in race conditions after a winter spent learning and getting to grips with the new cars. “Nobody knows where we’ll be in the race. We did a lot of running this winter to try and understand as much as possible. We have to finish this race; we haven’t had any mechanical problems, but we know we have to finish to score points, so that can make the difference. We’ll try to optimize tomorrow.”

In an often unpredictable race like Melbourne, where safety car periods and retirements are frequent, starting further back on the grid doesn't necessarily mean the end of points hopes. Strategic management, reliability, and in-race opportunities could offer the Frenchman a chance to climb the standings at the Australian Grand Prix, the first race of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

For Verstappen, it was the entire rear end that locked up. His front right tire had nothing to do with it! A little more seriousness in your writing, please.

I could easily picture the two Haas cars in Q3 instead of the two Racing Bulls, who had a very good qualifying result! But tomorrow's race is going to be long and certainly eventful, as is often the case in Melbourne.
