It was expected since the confirmation of Cadillac's presence as the eleventh team on the starting grid: the American manufacturer will also manufacture its own engines. The GM Performance Power Units LLC structure, set up at the beginning of the year, will therefore ensure the manufacture of the group's power units, for use with the team of Formula 1 Cadillac. While this introduction was planned for 2028, GM engines will finally arrive on the grid in 2029.
The official statement from General Motors, however, confirms that its Formula 1 team will use engines Ferrari until its arrival as an engine supplier. This means that the Italian block will be at the back of the Cadillac F1 cars for three seasons, from 2026 to 2028. The development of the engine is already underway, and will then continue from 2026 in a dedicated factory in Charlotte, North Carolina. This factory will be located near the General Motors technical center in the city, which is also the birthplace of the NASCAR U.S..
The FIA welcomes this new arrival
"With this validation from the FIA, we will continue our efforts to bring an American engine back to the Formula 1 grid.", said Russ O'Blenes, CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC.
The President of the International Automobile Federation, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, welcomed this new arrival in 2029: “Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC as a new engine supplier to Formula 1 in 2029 is another step forward in the expansion of Formula 1 from an international perspective. It also highlights the ever-growing interest from industry giants like General Motors.”

How can we believe that the Americans, pragmatists par excellence, are going to sink hundreds of millions of dollars into a PowerUnit for just 2 years at a loss! I won't be surprised to learn at the beginning of 2027 that an agreement, kept secret, has already been signed to replace the 2026 block with a very noisy "high revs" engine (a V8 to please the Yankees, just to downsize compared to the V10 and V12) that is totally "fossil free fuel"! Don't forget that the major car manufacturers are going to suffer enormously in the next 2 to 3 years thanks to the Trumpist administration and that this will inevitably impact their commitments to motorsport...

2029? Only for two years since the 2026 engines are supposed to be used until the end of 2030! Even on April 2029st, this information wouldn't get through!! Unless it's already a given that from XNUMX onwards, the definition of engines will be different!

So developing an engine for a single season knowing that the regulations are changing in 2030? I find it hard to believe. Suffice to say that we probably won't see the GM engine before 2030.
