Since the post-autumn break, the team in vogue is definitely Ferrari! Team won the last two races with a rather disconcerting and unexpected mastery, in Austin and then in Mexico. A domination which allows the Italian team to return to the race for the Constructors' title, with a deficit which has melted to only 29 points behind McLaren before the last four meetings of the 2024 season.
And if there is one who is rubbing his hands, outside of Maranello, it is Lewis Hamilton ! The Briton will spend his last four weekends with Mercedes and will fly to Italy for the next campaign, in 2025. Inevitably, the Scuderia's recent performances have given him a certain impatience before joining Ferrari.
When asked at a press conference on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Brazilian Grand Prix, if he was encouraged by the progress of the Reds, the seven-time champion answered without hesitation. “Of course! At the beginning of the year, if you look at China for example, the Red Bull had a one-second lead. It's quite incredible to see the rise of McLaren, and then Ferrari in the last few races, to see their progress," emphasizes the Englishman, who nevertheless hopes that Mercedes will be able to learn from its competitors for the future. “We try to keep an eye on everyone’s cars and what they change and what they add. We watch all the videos, all the drivers, we watch all the laps and we always try to see where we can gain time.”
Hamilton and Mercedes "did not expect" to mid-season successes
With Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton out of the running for both championships, the Briton finds himself watching the McLaren-Ferrari duel for the Constructors' title. His former team, with whom he won his first title in 2008, facing his future team: the match obviously interests the Stevenage native, who obviously regrets not being part of it...
“That’s what we all would have liked, to be in the fight for the championship. That’s what everyone is working towards. We knew at the beginning of the year that it would be difficult from the first laps, and we didn’t expect to have the success we’ve had, recognizes Lewis Hamilton, winner twice this season. Obviously at Silverstone everyone worked really hard to get this result, and I'm incredibly grateful to the team for that. But yeah, I know this team really well and I know the results and the position we're in this year will only encourage them to work even harder to have a better car next year."
