"I don't think I need to say more.", commented soberly Pierre Gasly during the first Free Practice session at Silverstone. "No, no, no. It's going to be okay. It's clear you're not satisfied.", immediately cut off his engineer. This Friday, the Frenchman lived through hell, ranking 19th then 18th in EL1 and EL2, which does not bode well for qualifying.
It's not a secret, Alpine is having an extremely complicated season. Beyond the multiple changes in the organizational chart, which are becoming a habit, and the situation of the second driver, it is the performances on the track which are the most worrying. Before Silverstone, the teamenstone is in last place in the Constructors' standings, well behind its midfield rivals: Sauber, ninth, has scored more than double the points ofAlpine. Moreover, the name "Enstone team" probably corresponds more to the reality of the team. On the sidelines of this weekend, drivers and members of the team have constantly reminded that it is indeed their "Grand Prix at home".
Unprecedented problems for Gasly at Silverstone
On Friday evening, Pierre Gasly showed his confidence in his team, certain that everyone would work hard during the night. "I would like to know what is going on, but there is something that needs to be addressed. We will work hard with the team and find solutions."
Behind this confidence and this facade of smile, the words betrayed the Frenchman's concern. "I had a very difficult Friday.", he noted at the F1 microphoneAsked about the nature of the problems encountered on his A525, he fumbled. "No. Well, I know what's wrong, but it's unlike anything we've seen this year. I'm sure there's an explanation."
This year, the Alpine were able to prove competitive in qualifying, before gradually falling down the rankings on Sunday. Given the performances displayed this Friday, one can nevertheless legitimately wonder if an A525 will be able to escape from Q1. At home, not making it to Q2 would look bad.
