Born in 1946 in Pierrefort, Cantal, Jean Todt wasn't necessarily destined to become one of the most influential figures in the history of motorsport. His career, however, began in the co-driver's seat. In the 1960s and 1970s, he crisscrossed the roads of the World Rally Championship (WRC), initially as a simple navigator before establishing himself as one of the best specialists in the discipline. Alongside drivers like Guy Fréquelin, he achieved several victories and a runner-up title in the World Rally Championship in 1981. Rigorous, methodical and strategic, Jean Todt already revealed qualities as an organizer and leader of men.
After 1981, he retired from competition and changed course. He joined Peugeot to head the competition department. At the helm of Peugeot Talbot Sport, he built a formidable structure. Under his leadership, the French brand dominated the Group B era with the 205 Turbo 16, won two manufacturers' titles in the WRC (1985 and 1986), and then triumphed in the Rally Dakar four times between 1987 and 1990. It also allowed Peugeot to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1992 and the following year, with a historic triple victory for the French team. In just a few years, Jean Todt transformed Peugeot into the absolute benchmark of motorsport, thanks to meticulous organization and humane management praised by his drivers.
The builder of the Ferrari dynasty
In 1993, a new challenge arose: to revive the Team Ferrari, then losing momentum in Formula 1Appointed director of sporting management, Jean Todt began a fundamental overhaul. He restructured the team, attracted key engineers like Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, and convinced Michael Schumacher to join the project in 1996. Patience eventually paid off: from 1999 onwards, Ferrari began a historic period of dominance with six consecutive constructors' titles (1999-2004) and five drivers' world titles for Schumacher (2000-2004). Jean Todt became one of the key architects of this golden era, a symbol of long-term management and a rare cohesion within the paddock.
Promoted to managing director of Scuderia Ferrari, then to a board member of the group, he gradually withdrew from the day-to-day management of the team while remaining associated with its success. His time in Maranello left a lasting mark, both on the sporting and managerial fronts.
In 2009, Jean Todt was elected president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). During his three terms, which lasted until 2021, he placed road safety and technological innovation at the heart of his work. He oversaw the introduction of new regulations in Formula 1 and supported the development of electric championships such as the Formula E and works to strengthen the international dimension of the FIA. His mandate is also marked by an increased focus on driver safety and reducing the environmental footprint of the sport.
At 80, Jean Todt remains a respected figure, whose career spans more than half a century of motorsport history. Co-driver, sporting director, president of a world governing body: few have embraced so many facets of the discipline with such success.
