Lando Norris is champion, but not master of the world

At Yas Marina, the Briton performed his task diligently, taking no risks to secure the points needed to clinch the championship. A champion of merit, but not of flamboyance, he leaves the honorary title of "Driver of the Year" to Max Verstappen, the day's winner. Final words.

We can't see them, but we can sense them! Lando Norris He weeps uncontrollably, his tears flowing freely. Tears of joy, and of relief too. Never before had any driver had to wait twenty-four races to claim the crown. What is he thinking during this victory lap, which he wishes would last forever? His retirement at Zandvoort? The disqualification at Las Vegas? The overtake on Antonelli in Qatar? The maneuver he executed a few laps earlier that allowed him to shake off the "block" that was Tsunod?

Uh...nothing. Am I right? It's worth noting that a single driver can hardly clinch the title. A second-string driver of Perez's caliber managed to hold off Hamilton at the crucial moment in 2021, while a joker like Tsunoda failed miserably, even receiving a penalty. At the start of 2024, if Perez hadn't so often locked out second place, Verstappen wouldn't have built such a lead. Red Bull should reflect on that.

As always, we'll remember the Champion, namely Norris, and we'll quickly forget the incredible comeback of the Dutchman who single-handedly carried Red Bull Racing. But what did the team with the cans do to ensure that their second car was also in contention? You have two hours before I collect your papers!

Verstappen is undoubtedly the best on the track, capable of snatching victories or podium finishes while very rarely making mistakes, or of staging spectacular comebacks. But his car is built according to his every whim, without any internal competition. If it became less competitive from the summer of 2024 to the summer of 2025, he is therefore responsible; he could demand whatever he wanted and pushed the team in such a narrow direction that the car was sometimes undrivable even for him. He is therefore probably not the best development driver, and to become world champion, being the most flamboyant on the track is not enough, as this proves.
