The demonstration will take place, according to the Brazilian media BAND, at 17 p.m. local time (21 p.m. in France) on Saturday, at the end of the Sprint and qualifying day. Hamilton will sit in the MP4/5B with which Ayrton Senna won his second world title, two years after his first. This is not the first time that the Briton will be able to drive a car owned by his childhood hero, as he already took the wheel of the legendary 4 MP4/1988 during a filming for the Top Gear show in 2009. This is the second time this year that a former car Senna performs laps on the Grand Prix weekend, after the demonstration by Sebastian Vettel at the wheel of the 4 MP8/1993, the last McLaren Ayrton Senna. The organizers should also pay tribute to Gil de Ferran and Wilson Fittipaldi, who died a few months ago.
The year 1990 also marked the return of the Brazilian Grand Prix to the Interlagos circuit, where the round will be held this weekend. The Grand Prix was previously held at Jacarepagua, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Senna finished third in the Grand Prix, behind the winner, his great rival Alain Prost, and Gerhard Berger, driving the other McLaren/Honda.
The Brazilian died on May 1, 1994, following an accident while leading the San Marino Grand Prix. Triple World Champion Formula 1, he is among the most iconic drivers in the discipline, and has always been a great inspiration for seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. The latter has a special connection with Brazil, of which he was made an honorary citizen in 2022. In 2017, when he joined Ayrton Senna with 65 career pole positions, Lewis Hamilton received a helmet worn by his idol.
