After several seasons away from the title fight, Classic Mercedes for sale approaches the 2026 regulatory cycle with its new carThe W17, and a contrasting duo: George Russell, the established leader, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is preparing to compete in his second season in Formula 1They both already talk about the prospect of fighting for a world championship, but with different paths.
At 19, Antonelli embodies the future of the Silver Arrows. The Italian has made no secret of his ambitions: "The goal is to win and, ultimately, to compete for the world championship.""He said after his first laps in Barcelona. Encouraged by his feeling in the W17, he described a car "Better than expected", “more agile” thanks to the new dimensions imposed by the regulations, free from porpoising and offering greater freedom in adjustments: "We have more leeway to play with the settings, which is really interesting for a driver."
Facing him, George Russell represents both a challenge and a source of motivation. Antonelli considers him as "One of the benchmarks of the grid" and is already looking forward to this internal confrontation: "I think it's going to be pretty fun to fight him. I'm really looking forward to it." Aware of the road ahead, the young Italian nevertheless insists on the importance of experience: after a first season full of lessons, he explains that he wants to keep what worked while changing some approaches to arrive better prepared on each weekend.
Toto wolff tempers expectations surrounding his protégé. "I don't think we should expect him to be like George all the time.", recalls the Mercedes boss, emphasizing that Russell remains the internal benchmark: "George is one of the best, a true benchmark, and Kimi is 19 years old, he's only entering his second season. But we're going to see another step forward, I'm sure of it."
A self-proclaimed leader
For his part, George Russell arrives in 2026 with a different status. "I feel ready to fight for a world championship." On the eve of his eighth season in F1, the Briton says he is enthusiastic about the technical challenges imposed by the new regulations: energy management, active aerodynamics, new overtaking systems, he insists: "It's a huge challenge to adapt to these new cars... but I think I can take advantage of it, and I have confidence in myself and my team."
When asked about a possible fight against Max VerstappenRussell assumes: "I would love for it to happen like that. I want to battle wheel-to-wheel with Max.", while also highlighting the strength of the competition: « Red Bull "He's always had an incredible car... and we know how good Max is." Caution is also advised regarding the W17: "Is this a car capable of winning a championship? It's still far too early to say."he admits, despite positive signs after Barcelona.
The initial technical feedback is encouraging for Mercedes, though it doesn't resolve all the questions about the pecking order. Above his two drivers, Toto Wolff is adopting a balanced approach: "I'm really happy with how it went for us, especially the interaction between the engine, energy deployment, and chassis." But the team manager insists: "We've had three solid days, but we don't yet have a true picture of the performance... we simply don't know."
A return to the forefront?
After years of being unable to compete for a championship, one wonders if anything other than victory would be considered a failure. Refusing any premature projections, Wolff prefers to focus on 2026 as a long-term goal: "The word 'failure' is very harsh... I prefer to talk about an upward trajectory."he explains, before adding: "I don't want to arrive in Bahrain or Melbourne thinking we have a winning car if that's not the case."

Regarding Russell, who is often mentioned among the favorites, he considers this recognition logical: "He deserves this status, he's one of the best." But he immediately adds: "It's always the best driver and the best car that win, and we haven't yet proven that we have a sufficient package."
Regarding Antonelli, Wolff is confident: "He is exactly on the trajectory we had planned."recalling the difficulties associated with his first season in the "circus" F1 media. "There is no doubt about his speed and racing sense... I am absolutely certain that this will be a good year for him."
Two different trajectories, then, but the same objective: to take advantage of the fresh start offered by the regulations to put Mercedes back on top. If the W17 lives up to its promises, the battle could also be fought internally, between Russell's proven experience and Antonelli's rapid rise, a duel that would symbolize the Silver Arrows' return to the forefront of world title contenders.

It would be interesting to see Russell challenge for the title. But indeed, if the team continues to struggle while others are performing better with their engines, Mercedes might be tempted to revert to being solely an engine supplier if the investment in the chassis doesn't yield any additional benefits.

Toto is aiming for both titles after so many years of absence, and the Mercedes AG board in Stuttgart must be counting on it, especially after being beaten by a customer team in 23 and 24!

Indeed, on paper it looks good, but let's wait, first and foremost, for Australia...then we'll know!
