A seventh place and a retirement. This is the meager result of Mercedes in Emilia-Romagna, Sunday, May 18, during the Imola Grand Prix. Consistent until then, with four podiums in six races, George Russell, who started third and hoped to continue after his podium in Miami, had to settle for just six points at the finish.
For his part, young Kimi Antonelli didn't see the checkered flag. The Italian, who was born a few kilometers from the circuit and was racing on home soil, experienced a throttle issue that forced him to stop his car prematurely on lap 44. Fortunately for the Silver Arrows, Monaco arrives this weekend, with another opportunity to score big points.
"After a difficult race in Italy, we have the opportunity to bounce back immediately in Monaco. We will work hard, quickly and efficiently to understand what caused our limitations in Imola. It is important to control this to avoid a repeat.", ensures Toto wolff, boss of Mercedes.
Qualifying, Mercedes' strong point and the key to Monaco
But, it is not new, on the Rock, the challenge which awaits the German team and the whole paddock of the F1 will be very different from that of Imola. “Qualifying is absolutely essential and it’s one of our strong points this year. It’s encouraging, but it means nothing if we don’t perform on track,” Wolff says.
“We have seen how competitive the Saturdays have been this year, and it is always more intense in Monaco, continues the team director. We will have to give our best to give ourselves the means to fight for a good result on Sunday."
Finally, at Mercedes, we expect a Sunday different from other years, with the regulations evolving. “The two mandatory stops during the Grand Prix will add an extra dimension to the race. We are looking forward to taking on this challenge and getting back on track.”, concludes Toto Wolff.
