A thunderbolt in the Las Vegas night! Second and fourth respectively in the Grand Prix, the 22nd round of the 2025 season Formula 1, Lando Norris et Oscar piastri were disqualified for the same infraction on their McLaren MCL39. The rear skid of the single-seaters has indeed been too worn, and its thickness is therefore below the 9 millimeters required by the technical regulations.
As a result, both drivers and the team lose all the points scored in this penultimate race of the season. While the impact on the constructors' championship is minimal, as McLaren has already secured its second consecutive world title, the drivers' championship is thrown into sharp focus.
While Norris had managed to widen the gap on his teammate and move 30 points ahead of Oscar Piastri, the gap between the two men has now narrowed to 24 points. This is especially true at the level of Max Verstappen This double disqualification offers him renewed hope for the title. Winner of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Dutchman is now level on points with Piastri, and therefore only 24 points behind Lando Norris!
An unexpected double podium for Mercedes
To win the world title in Qatar, the Briton will therefore need to score (over the weekend, combining Sprint and Grand Prix points) more points than Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. Otherwise, the title will be decided in two weeks at the Abu Dhabi circuit, the venue for the final round of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, which clearly hasn't yet revealed all its secrets…
The other lesson is that Classic Mercedes for sale placed both its cars on the podium and made a masterstroke in the fight for second place in the Constructors' Championship. The German team now has a 40-point lead over Red Bull, for whom only Verstappen scored points, and 53 out of Classic Ferrari for sale, which now seems to be out of the running.
The elimination of both McLarens from the final standings also benefits the drivers who finished behind them. Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, climbs onto his second Formula 1 podium, Charles Leclerc regains fourth place, ahead Carlos Sainz (5th), Isack Hadjar (6th) and Nico Hulkenberg (7e). Lewis Hamilton jumps from 10th to 8th position, which allows the two Haas to enter the points with Esteban Ocon (9th) ahead of Oliver Bearman (10th).
In the Constructors' standings, the American team took advantage of the situation to overtake Aston Martin by one point (73 pts against 72) in the fight for 7th place. Thanks to the 6 points earned by Nico Hülkenberg, Sauber also remains in contention (9th with 68 points).

PS: Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about a "pro-Verstappen" conspiracy. Le Mans and the FIA couldn't care less who wins the title. But they do everything they can to facilitate the comeback of the challenger (whoever it may be), and penalize the one who gets too far ahead, in order to maximize the profits of all the players until the very last moment.

Conspiracy? Wear and tear on this board is the most imprecise thing there is. To potentially decide a title based on it is inconceivable. You can easily imagine that this "board" doesn't wear uniformly, 1mm here, 2 there, and on every car... If all the cars were checked at every Grand Prix, two-thirds would be disqualified each time. It's the best "wild card" the FIA has to revive the suspense (or to score a point at home for Sargeant last year) when they can't find any other pretext to penalize the driver with the biggest lead. For over 20 years, they've been penalizing the leader with petty squabbles at the end of the season, except when the title is decided 5 or 6 GPs in advance and nothing can salvage the suspense. And all this to the benefit of a driver who gains positions at an alarming rate, practically mowing the Mexican lawn, and who escapes all penalties. It's a bit too blatant to ignore...

MBS is Saudi, but we agree, the Emirates aren't much better...

It's true that in the "bling bling" kingdom of Sin City, the two McLarens were certainly the ones that stood out the most, and I wondered if the secret to being more competitive in 2025 than in 2024 wasn't a lower ride height! Clearly, McLaren took a gamble, lost, and isn't contesting the decision... just like Ferrari did with Hamilton earlier in the season. I agree with Ben about the conspiracy theories, even if it inevitably benefits Liberty Media and the FIA since everything will be decided either in Qatar or, most likely, at MBS in Abu Dhabi.

There have already been other exclusions for this same reason, both in F1 and WEC. McLaren accepted the penalty, end of story. Conspiracy theories are getting a bit tiresome...

I just woke up, and I dreamt about a McLaren disqualification… it really seems like… a setup! The die is cast… and there's no going back…? The penalty seems to be… confirmed… so the championship is completely wide open again… It's… Las Vegas! For Max… who can't do anything about it… it's like I said this morning… it's the… Jackpot… alainkf1@pt.lu 😎👀👍👀🏆

It's true that Piastri's car was really struggling... but not Norris's. They're going to end up making us hate F1 with these shenanigans, as obvious as a five-year-old's.

Before even watching the highlights, I thought to myself, "Now's the time to nitpick the championship leader for the sake of that sacred suspense." What better place than Las Vegas, organized by Leroy Merlin, who rules the roost in the name of showmanship? I was expecting some convoluted penalty for Norris, but they had to go even further given his lead... And they did. If the goal is for the championships to be decided in the last GP, why bother with the previous 23? We could have 24 championships a year in a single race; that would surely amuse the kids.

PATHETIC! What more could the FIA possibly do to ensure Max wins the title?! Seriously, one wonders where this is headed in the future. I repeat, it's utterly pathetic... Without meaning to be unkind, what was Red Bull's accurate analysis after their resurgence in Brazil? This whole situation doesn't bode well!

Blessed are the Haas, for the Kingdom of Points is finally theirs (Gospel according to Matthew etc.) Frustrating for everyone, as often happens, that this took place after podium, interviews, etc.
