Only a tenth separates Oscar piastri from the pole of Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix. The Australian held provisional pole for most of the final part of qualifying but will ultimately second the Dutchman on the front row of the grid at the start this Sunday at 16 p.m.
“I was happy with the first lap, it was a really big lap, honestly., he repeats. I wondered how to go faster but I couldn't. Oscar Piastri still ahead of his teammate Lando Norris, who completes the top 3 of these qualifications, by 15 thousandths.
« My last lap was a bit chaotic, but it's been close all weekend. The first lap was good, I don't know how much the track has improved, maybe we left some. » Another factor that Oscar Piastri could not have fought against: the magic of Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion at Red Bull, sent by rumors at Mercedes, took pole after finishing tenth, fifth and then third in free practice.
"The team has done a great job bringing pace to the car. The feeling has been good since the start of the weekend but there are a few areas we need to look at where we could be faster., Piastri emphasizes. Tomorrow's race could be exciting." As a reminder, the start of the 2025 British GP from F1 will be given at Silverstone this Sunday, July 5 at 16 p.m. French time.
For the 24-year-old driver, who is in his third season, being the leader of the Formula 1 championship is a new situation, which requires him to conduct himself in a particular way to maximize his chances in his quest for the title: “The balance is difficult to find. Obviously when you think it's a good lap you try not to overdrive and exceed the limits, underlines Oscar Piastri. There were maybe a few corners where I played it too safe and others where I tried to compensate too much. »
"Everyone should have roughly similar rhythms tomorrow."
Despite the disappointment of the second place, points are scored on Sunday. The Australian will be pleased to know that, in five of the last eight editions, the winner of the GP at Silverstone did not start from pole. A statistic which adds to the good form of the MCL39: " Once again the gaps are very tight, I am happy with second place and I am looking forward to the race. »
"I think it's going to be fun. I expect everyone should have roughly similar rhythms tomorrow.", analyzes Oscar Piastri. Each has its advantage: the Red Bull is faster on the straights, ours in the high-speed corners. We're going to have a lot of fun tomorrow."
Simple coincidence or warning sign: in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the fifth round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the last time Max Verstappen started from pole in a Grand Prix with Oscar Piastri in second position, the Australian ultimately won ahead of the Dutchman.

Piastri is a remarkably intelligent driver, on the level of Prost or Lauda. He knows full well that his real rival is Norris; Verstappen is completely out of the championship. But Verstappen doesn't impress him any more than his first pair of racing boots.
