In struggle with the Ferrari de Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly attempted to overtake on the outside in the Piratella corner.Alpine A525 ended up in the gravel, causing its French driver to lose several positions. The Norman driver took responsibility for his mistake; he was too angry.

"Personally, I'm not happy with my race because I made this mistake, which really shouldn't have happened.", he explained on the official F1 website. "I fought hard, too hard, trying to resist on the outside while giving Charles space. Unfortunately, when I turned, I had no more grip and I couldn't take the corner. I think that initially made us lose four places, then we decided to switch to a two-stop strategy."

A strategy that should have allowed Gasly to catch up with his rivals, who only stopped once. Unfortunately, the late-race intervention of the safety car for Andrea Kimi Antonelli's retirement prevented the Frenchman from fighting back at the end of the race.

"We could have fought the one-stoppers at the end of the race, but the Safety Car gave them a free pit stop. Luck wasn't really on our side today. Objectively, we also struggled a bit more than expected with the tires. There's a lot to analyze."

Optimism for Monaco

After another appearance in Q3, the winner of the 2020 Italian Grand Prix still takes some positives from his visit to Imola this year. Having a car who now seems capable of playing at the forefront in qualifying is obviously crucial when it comes to tackling the Monaco Grand Prix next week...

“I was very happy with the car for one lap, and we did a good job until Q3, where everything didn't fit together perfectly. Overall, we have pace, we just need to analyze what happens in the race. We know that next week it will be mainly qualifying that counts, so I hope we can capitalize on this point which seems to be quite good for us.”

Trying to overtake on the outside in Piratella, which is a fast, slightly sloping curve, is a bit optimistic and daring...
