While a large part of the paddock is expressing doubts about the engine's hot compression ratio Mercedes Benz, which would exceed the rate of 16/1 analyzed at room temperature by the FIA, the governing body of the World Championship Formula 1 announced that an online vote will be held regarding a possible amendment to the technical regulations, effective from August 1st.

The engine manufacturers involved (Mercedes, Classic Ferrari for saleHonda, RBPT (Ford, Audi) now have about ten days to decide on a change that would not affect the compression ratio itself, but rather the timing of the measurement. Currently, Formula 1 engines cannot exceed the compression ratio specified in the regulations during measurements, which are taken "cold," meaning at ambient temperature.

The FIA's proposal is to modify the measurement system from August 1st, which would then analyze the compression ratio at ambient temperature, but also at 130°C, which is not so far from the operating temperature of Formula 1 engines, which can reach up to 150°C.

If the engine manufacturers agree to this proposal, the FIA will change its measurement system starting with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, and the manufacturers will have to ensure they comply with the FIA-set compression ratio at all times. Rumors suggest a compression ratio of up to 18:1 for Mercedes engines, which could give the Silver Arrows an advantage of up to 15 horsepower in races.

Or how to leave the regulations unchanged, regulations that seem rather amateurish! That said, the ingenuity of F1 engineers knows no bounds when it comes to exploiting anything that isn't explicitly forbidden...

I'm a little surprised by this proposal. It seems to me that temperature has only a marginal effect on the static compression ratio. The potential gains lie in dynamic cylinder filling, if we can improve it at certain engine speeds and frequencies.
