The FIA, F1 and the teams sign the new Concorde Agreement

This is an opportune moment for the medium-term future of the Formula 1The FIA, the Formula One Group, and the eleven teams that will make up next year's grid have signed the Concorde Agreement, the ninth in the sport's history. Introduced in 1981, the Concorde Agreements aim to define the main rules governing the operation of Formula 1, as well as to regulate commercial rights. This notably concerns the share of revenue allocated to the teams, which in principle receive 50% of the profits generated by Formula 1.

Therefore, this sum is shared among all teams, which explains the reluctance of some to allow an eleventh team to join, as this further dilutes revenue. The Concorde Agreements also aim to set the price a potential team must pay to join the grid, as well as the maximum budget imposed on each team. This ninth installment covers the period 2026-2030, the next five seasons.

“The ninth Concorde Agreement guarantees the long-term future of the FIA Formula One World Championship and I am proud of the commitment that has been invested in this process,” Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, rejoices after being re-elected following a democratic process in which he had… no opponent. “I would like to thank Stefano Domenicali (President of the Formula One Group) and his team for this strong collaboration, which has enabled us to build a framework based on fairness, stability, and shared ambition. This agreement allows us to continue modernizing our regulatory, technological, and operational capabilities, notably by supporting our race directors, officials, and the thousands of volunteers whose expertise is essential to the smooth running of every race. We are committed to ensuring that Formula 1 remains at the forefront of technological innovation and sets new standards in global sport.”

The eleven teams will remain until at least 2030

"Today is an important day for Formula 1," assures Stefano Domenicali. “As we celebrate seventy-five years of this extraordinary sport, we are proud to write the next chapter of our long and incredible history. This agreement ensures that Formula 1 is in the best possible position to continue its growth around the world. I would like to thank FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, as well as all the teams, for their collaboration and determination in achieving the best possible outcome for the entire sport during our discussions. We have enormous reasons to be proud, but we also remain focused on the exciting opportunities and potential that lie ahead for Formula 1 in the years to come.”

These agreements, which have made Formula 1 the commercial success it is today, are often kept private. However, some guidelines are evident in the FIA's press release, which states that "the new contract allows the FIA to invest more in improving race regulations, race direction, arbitration, and technical expertise for the benefit of the Championship." Should we see this as a sign of a change in how race direction is managed, a major battle for the drivers at the end of this year? Exasperated by the inconsistency of decisions, they had called a meeting with the FIA in Qatar. Perhaps they were heard, particularly regarding their demand for permanent race stewards rather than rotating seats.

It should also be noted that the current Concorde Agreements mean that the eleven teams present on the grid in 2026 will remain so until the expiry of the contract at the end of 2030.
