The 2025 season of Formula 1 is drawing to a close and three drivers remain in contention for the world championship title. Oscar piastri He nevertheless occupies third position in this close battle, having dominated the championship from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to the Mexican Grand Prix. He trails by 16 points. Lando NorrisCurrent championship leader Oscar Piastri has repeatedly let valuable points slip away, which could ultimately cost him the title. Looking back at Oscar Piastri's 2025 season, we must return to the opening race in his hometown of Melbourne. In Formula 1, every point counts, and those the Australian missed in the first race of the year could prove sorely missed at the end of the championship.

Driver #81 had started on the front row of the Australian Grand Prix, behind his teammate Lando Norris, with the Papayas controlling the race until the downpours hit the Albert Park circuit on lap 44. In turn 12, both drivers lost control of their cars. car In the rain, he slipped into the gravel trap. While Lando Norris managed to rejoin the track cleanly, Oscar Piastri ended up on the grass, unable to restart for several seconds. The Australian then dropped to the back of the pack and crossed the finish line only in ninth position, far behind his victorious teammate. A first major setback for the Melbourne native.

A few months later, the Italian Grand Prix was the scene of another decisive episode in the title race. At Monza, McLaren This sparked controversy when he ordered Oscar Piastri to let Lando Norris through. Running third and second respectively for most of the Grand Prix, the two drivers pitted on laps 45 and 46. A slow stop cost Norris his position, allowing Piastri to take it… but only for a few moments. Reprimanded by his engineer, the Australian gave the position back, not without a hint of bitterness. Three points were thus lost to him.

Is this the beginning of the end for Oscar Piastri?

The following week in Azerbaijan, everything went wrong for the 24-year-old driver. Crashed in the streets of Baku during chaotic qualifying marked by six red flags, Oscar Piastri again lost control on the first lap of the race, on a particularly slippery circuit, ending his weekend, undoubtedly the worst of his season.

In Singapore, the Australian seemed to be back on track, starting from third position, which he nevertheless lost to Lando Norris, who was aggressive at the start. Perhaps too aggressive: the Briton had to brake sharply to avoid the Red Bull de Max Verstappen and collided with his teammate, who was furious at this unpenalized maneuver. Piastri ultimately finished just off the podium.

Having been relatively free of errors until then, the Aussie then began to accumulate them, notably causing a collision at the start of the Sprint race in Austin with his teammate Lando Norris. Both Papayas were thus forced to retire, the Australian's championship lead inexorably melting away.

Another setback in Brazil: at Interlagos, the Australian crashed out during the Sprint race while Norris went on to take the victory. Forced to retire once again, the #81 saw crucial points slip away in his quest for a first world title.

Just when he seemed to be regaining his best form in Qatar, it was his own team that dealt a potentially fatal blow to his ambitions. On lap 7, after a collision between Nico Hülkenberg and Pierre Gasly The safety car was deployed, and all the teams called their drivers back to the pits… except McLaren. The Woking-based team took a gamble by leaving Piastri and Norris out on track. A decision that ultimately proved disastrous, despite the Australian finishing second. With one race remaining, every point counts, and Piastri may well have lost several that day.

Have these incidents jeopardized his chances of winning the title? Will Oscar Piastri be able to lift the trophy despite his blunders? Anything is possible… Join us on December 7th for live text commentary on AUTOhebdo to follow the outcome of this fierce battle.

Maybe McLaren isn't saying it, but Oscar had to give in to Brown's wishes, because of his lead over Lando, to let him become champion this year... Hence his behavior since mid-season... unless there was a check! But I don't believe that's coming from him... It was still better in my day, when you, the driver, did your job ALONE behind the wheel...

And if we consider Norris's mistakes, which he accumulated at the start of the season, as well as that first corner in Vegas where, with his eyes in his mirrors, he forgot to look ahead, what bothers me most is that this is the championship of whoever makes the fewest mistakes, including McLaren's. Verstappen's comeback wasn't thanks to the performance of his Red Bull; it was mainly due to that (and a little bit to the leniency of the stewards in Mexico). That's not exactly what we expect from world champion contenders. And ultimately, the real on-track duel was short-lived, apart from a few close calls that almost turned ugly in Austria, for example. On this point, I think the extremely poor visibility in current F1 cars plays a significant role.

It's funny to read someone criticizing others for taking inspiration from social media, all in the very elegant style of said social media.

The least experienced of the three title contenders, the lowest-placed in the standings, and, on top of that, penalized by McLaren for leaving his seat behind during FP1 this morning in Abu Dhabi! The 2025 title will be decided between the Englishman and the Dutchman...
